Nana's Apple Dumplings

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 Cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 Cups water
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg
  • 1/4 Cup butter
  • 6 Apples, pared, and cut into fourths
  • 2 Cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 2/3 Cup shortening
  • 3/4 Cup milk
  • 1/4 Cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • Dash of nutmeg

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  • Make a syrup with the first four ingredients; add butter
  • Sift flour, salt, and baking powder; cut in shortening
  • Add milk all at once and stir until moistened
  • Roll 1/4 inch thick; cut into 5-inch squares
  • Arrange 2 pieces of apple on each square; sprinkle generously with additional sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg
  • Fold corners to the center and pinch edges together
  • Place in greased 9 x 13 baking pan
  • Pour syrup over the dumplings and bake for 35 minutes
